Mid-Term Elections Count, and So Do You!

As motivated members of the #BDSquad, it’s no secret that most of us maintain busy schedules. Between work, school, clubs, sports and hobbies, voting this midterm election can be the last thing on our minds. While a full schedule can help us to achieve our #SquadGoals, so can voting in the upcoming election. Part of being a strong member of the #BDSquad is being informed and having a voice in society. This is just one reason why you should vote this election.

Voting is a Right

The ability to vote may be a right that is taken for granted by some Americans, but not all citizens have always held this democratic right. It wasn’t until the establishment of the 15th Amendment following the Civil War, ratified in 1870, that prohibited states from denying a male citizen the rights to vote based on “race, color, or previous conditions of servitude”. Despite this, discriminatory practices were still used to prevent blacks from voting, especially in the South. Often, law officials would force black voters to recite the entire Constitution or explain the most complex provisions of state laws in order to vote.

Not surprisingly, these were tasks that the majority of Americans would find to be impossible. It was the Voting Rights Act of 1965, signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, that aimed to overcome legal barriers at both state and local levels that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote. This act is seen as being one of the most far-reaching pieces of civil rights legislature in United States history. Voting is a right that your ancestors fought for and one that should be valued.

Midterm Elections Determine Your Future

This midterm election, the results will most likely reshape the trajectory of life in the United States for our generation. This election, both Republicans and Democrats will be vying for control of Congress, while dozens of elections for governorships, mayoral and state legislature chamber elections will be decided. Important decisions regarding marginalized communities are being made and it is important for all communities to voice their needs and opinions.  While early voting is underway, Election Day is Tuesday, November 6.

It’s time to make voting a #SquadGoal this November. Learn more about your voting location here.
